My little monkeys love the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault. I have wanted to do some kind of project for some time now using the book as the theme.
While shopping at Target this last weekend, I found Angie's brand Boom Chicka Pop popcorn. I couldn't resist and picked some up. Today, as I looked at the popcorn and the formula can I used for our Leprechaun trap, it came to me. This is our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree. From the time I thought of what to do to completion of two trees it took about 10 minutes total. That's it! I think this was my quickest craft I have ever done with the kids.
I used an old formula can that I had previously washed, dried, and set aside to use with crafts, etc. You can use any clean metal can. I covered the entire can with brown paper. Then cut a strip of green out and from that strip leaves, still leaving the bottom as a band that I wrapped around the top of the can and secured with tape. The letters are from a Leapfrog refrigerator magnet toy, you can use any magnetic letters you can find. You can make it even more detailed by adding shading to the "trunk" of the tree or coconuts, etc.
The monkeys had a blast with there Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees. While they played with their trees, I put on the book being read aloud on YouTube. After they were done playing, we ate our Boom Chicka Pop as a snack. Considering it was something I came up with on the fly, the kids both loved it and it went really smoothing.
