Unit Studies: How To Make An Apple Pie And See The World

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman is a great book to build a unit study around for the month of September.  We recently completed a unit on Johnny Appleseed and apples.  For a field trip we went apple picking.  So what do you do with all those apples?  Make an apple pie of course!

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World is the story of a little girl who wants to make an apple pie using only the best ingredients. She travels the world stopping at several different places to gather what she needs.  There is a recipe at the end of the book for an apple pie.

You can tie in several different themes with this book: apples, geography, travel and baking.  I like to start the unit with a video to get the kids excited.  Here is a link to a video of a great reading of the book:

We then read the book each day we work on the unit.  You can do a lapbook or mini books.  Here are some great resources to check out:

Apples and Johnny Appleseed Research by 1st Grade WienerFUL  (You could get two units out of this one with one on Johnny Appleseed and one on Apples.)

I like to enrich the unit with books and videos about the countries being visited in the book.  Also, I add in great books about apples well.

Unit Studies: Dr. Seuss

Every year we celebrate Dr. Seuss on his birthday.  We do a full week, with each day centering around a different book.  For instance, on Wednesday, we read Wacky Wednesday.  I decorate with shoes on the wall and an umbrella in a pot.  The kids dress "wacky" and they love it.  On Friday, we read green eggs and ham and I make green eggs and ham for breakfast.

This is a super easy unit and there are lots of videos, lapbooks and printables available for free that you can add it to enrich the unit.

There are a lot of really fun videos available too!  Click below for my Dr. Seuss video playlist:

VHC Introduction

Welcome to How This Mom Does It!  I blog on this website and post videos on the YouTube channel How This Mom Does It.

This year I am participating in the Virtual Homeschool Coop (VHC).  The VHC is a group of homeschool bloggers and vloggers that are coming together to share knowledge and support.  You can check out the other bloggers and youtubers (or participate) by visiting the Virtual Homeschool Coop website.  I will be posting both blog posts and videos depending on the topic.

A little about How This Mom Does It:

I am a stay at home and homeschooling mom of a 6 year old (1st/2nd grade) and a 4 year old (preschool). We live in the United States and this is our third year homeschooling and our second year homeschooling through a charter. We are able to choose our own curriculum or use what our charter offers.  However, the majority of our curriculum are items that I have chosen or put together.

Our homeschooling style is very eclectic with a mix of Classical, Unit Studies, Charlotte Mason, and even some Traditional.  Our Homeschool Mission Statement is to help our children develop into confident, hard working, caring adults who are life long learners.

We first started researching homeschooling years ago as a possible educational option for our children.  At that time, we didn't know anyone personally who were homeschooling.  I did a lot of research on the internet (including Facebook and YouTube) to help figure out what homeschooling might look like for our family.  I met some really great people and gained a lot of knowledge.  I look forward to sharing some of our experiences and encouraging other homeschoolers.  I am also excited to meet more homeschool vloggers and bloggers!

I hope your homeschool year is going great! I look forward to sharing more about How This Mom Does It!
